Newly discovered sister lineage sheds light on early ant evolution

Title: Newly discovered sister lineage sheds light on early ant evolution

Authors: Rabeling, Christian; Brown, Jeremy M.; Verhaagh, Manfred

Abstract: Ants are the world's most conspicuous and important eusocial insects and their diversity, abundance, and extreme behavioral specializations make them a model system for several disciplines within the biological sciences. Here, we report the discovery of a new ant that appears to represent the sister lineage to all extant ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The phylogenetic position of this cryptic predator from the soils of the Amazon rainforest was inferred from several nuclear genes, sequenced from a single leg. Martialis heureka (gen. et sp. nov.) also constitutes the sole representative of a new, morphologically distinct subfamily of ants, the Martialinae (subfam. nov.). Our analyses have reduced the likelihood of long-branch attraction artifacts that have troubled previous phylogenetic studies of early-diverging ants and therefore solidify the emerging view that the most basal extant ant lineages are cryptic, hypogaeic foragers. On the basis of morphological and phylogenetic evidence we suggest that these specialized subterranean predators are the sole surviving representatives of a highly divergent lineage that arose near the dawn of ant diversification and have persisted in ecologically stable environments like tropical soils over great spans of time.

Abstract: A new species of the fungus-farming ant genus Mycetagroicus Brandão & Mayhé-Nunes (Hymenoptera,
Formicidae, Attini). The fungus-farming ant genus Mycetagroicus Brandão & Mayhé-Nunes was proposed based on three
species from the Brazilian “Cerrado”: M. cerradensis, M. triangularis and M. urbanus. Here we describe a new species of
Attini ant of the genus Mycetagroicus, M. inflatus n. sp., based on two workers collected in eastern Pará State, Brazil.
A new key for species identification, comments on differences among species and new geographical distribution data are
furnished.

A taxonomic revision of the Neotropical myrmicine ant genus Lachnomyrmex Wheeler (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Title: A taxonomic revision of the Neotropical myrmicine ant genus Lachnomyrmex Wheeler (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Authors: Feitosa, Rodrigo Machado; Brandão, Carlos Roberto F.

Abstract: The Neotropical ant genus Lachnomyrmex Wheeler, 1910 is revised for the first time. A revised generic description is
provided for workers and gynes; males remain unknown. Morphological patterns combined with geographical data led to
the recognition of 16 species, of which 10 are here described as new: L. amazonicus sp. n., L. fernandezi sp. n., L. grandis
Fernández & Baena, L. haskinsi Smith, L. lattkei sp. n., L. longinodus Fernández & Baena, L. longinoi sp. n., L.
mackayi sp. n., L. nordestinus sp. n., L. pilosus Weber, L. laticeps sp. n., L. platynodus sp. n., L. plaumanni Borgmeier,
L. regularis sp. n., L. scrobiculatus Wheeler, and L. victori sp. n. The gynes of L. grandis, L. haskinsi, and L. pilosus are
described for the first time. Illustrated identification keys for workers, distribution maps, and high resolution illustrations
are supplied for all species. Some Lachnomyrmex species are relatively common in the leaf-litter of submontane wet forests
in Central and South America; others remain known by very few individuals. The relatively small and apparently
monogynic Lachnomyrmex colonies inhabit small nests in the ground, among rotten leaves and inside fallen logs. Workers
generally forage alone on the ground or within the leaf litter, but have been recorded also on tree trunks, and apparently
do not recruit nestmates.

Title: Pheidole bilimeki reconsidered (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Authors: Longino, John T.; Cox, Daniel J.

Abstract: Pheidole bilimeki is a common ant species throughout northern South America, Central America, and southern Mexico. Character variation is reevaluated and Pheidole bilimeki is redefined. Pheidole anastasii rev. stat. and P. jamaicensis rev. stat., n. stat. are removed from synonymy and P. jamaicensis is elevated to species rank. Pheidole anastasii is a relatively uniform species that lives in plant cavities in the understory of closed canopy forest. Pheidole jamaicensis and P. bilimeki inhabit open areas and are often associated with human altered landscapes. Pheidole anastasii occurs in lowland Atlantic slope forests from Panama to Guatemala and southern Mexico (Chiapas); P. jamaicensis is restricted to
the islands of Jamaica and Hispaniola; P. bilimeki occurs on Cuba, the Bahamas, and the American mainland. Differentiating characters are also provided for Pheidole punctatissima, a common species with habitus and habits
similar to P. bilimeki.

Authors: Buschinger, Alfred; Schulz, Andreas

Abstract: Gyne (holotype), worker and male of Leptothorax athabasca sp.n. are described from the Athabasca River valley,
Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The most characteristic features of gyne and worker are a sharp dorsal crest of
the petiolar node, a straight dorsal profile of the mesosoma, acute and straight horizontal propodeal spines, and a comparatively
flat dorsal surface of the mesosoma. Leptothorax athabasca sp.n. has been found in only one very small plot of
a few 100 square meters, upriver of Athabasca Falls south of Jasper. It appears to be a rare, local species with adaptations
to dwelling rock crevices. Possible reasons for such a restricted range are discussed. The new species nests in
rock crevices, an exception among its congeners which usually are found in dead wood.

Authors: Bolton, Barry; Fisher, Brian L.

Abstract: The ponerine ant genus Centromyrmex Mayr is redefined and its Afrotropical species are fully revised. Ten Afrotropical
species are recognised of which six are described as new (decessor, ereptor, fugator, praedator, raptor, secutor). Two
former infraspecific names are elevated to species rank (angolensis, longiventris) and four new junior synonyms of sell-
aris (= arnoldi, = congolensis, = constanciae, = guineensis) are established. The monotypic genus Promyopias Santschi
is revived from synonymy and a new monotypic genus, Feroponera, type-species F. ferox sp. n., is introduced. The pos-
sibility of a Centromyrmex genus group is discussed and a revised key to Afrotropical genera of Ponerinae is presented.

Title: Review of the ant genus Aenictus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Australia with notes on A. ceylonicus (Mayr)

Authors: Shattuck, Steven O.

Abstract: The Australian members of the ant genus Aenictus are revised. Eight species were found to occur in Australia with three
described as new (acerbus sp. n.., aratus Forel, diclops sp. n., hilli Clark, nesiotis Wheeler and Chapman, philiporum
Wilson, prolixus sp. n. and turneri Forel). A. hilli is known only from males and its relationship to the remaining worker-
based species is uncertain. Of the seven worker-based species, five are restricted to Australia, one is shared with Papua
New Guinea and one is shared with Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. Aenictus aratus nesiotis Wheeler and Chap-
man is removed from synonymy with A. aratus and raised to full species, A. pachycerus impressus Karavaiev is newly
synonymised with A. aratus and A. turneri is removed from synonymy with A. ceylonicus (Mayr). Additionally, the fol-
lowing changes are proposed for non-Australian species: A. aitkenii Forel is removed from synonymy with A. aratus, A.
aratus asiatica Forel is removed from synonymy with A. aratus and synonymised with A. aitkenii, A. levior Karavaiev is
removed from synonymy with A. aratus and raised to full species, A. orientalis (Karavaiev) is removed from synonymy
with A. ceylonicus, A. papuanus Donisthorpe is removed from synonymy with A. ceylonicus and, together with A. similis
Donisthorpe, is newly synonymised with A. orientalis. A lectotype is designated for A. impressus and a neotype for A.

The Namanereidinae (Polychaeta: Nereididae). Part 1, Taxonomy and Phylogeny

Title: The Namanereidinae (Polychaeta: Nereididae). Part 1, Taxonomy and Phylogeny

Authors: Glasby, Christopher J.

Abstract: A cladistic analysis and taxonomic revision of the Namanereidinae (Nereididae: Polychaeta)
is presented. The cladistic analysis utilising 39 morphological characters (76 apomorphic states) yielded
10,000 minimal-length trees and a highly unresolved Strict Consensus tree. However, monophyly of the
Namanereidinae is supported and two clades are identified: Namalycastis containing 18 species and
Namanereis containing 15 species. The monospecific genus Lycastoides, represented by L. alticola
Johnson, is too poorly known to be included in the analysis. Classification of the subfamily is modified
to reflect the phylogeny. Thus, Namalycastis includes large-bodied species having four pairs of tentacular
cirri; autapomorphies include the presence of short, subconical antennae and enlarged, flattened and
leaf-like posterior cirrophores. Namanereis includes smaller-bodied species having three or four pairs
of tentacular cirri; autapomorphies include the absence of dorsal cirrophores, absence of notosetae and
a tripartite pygidium. Cryptonereis Gibbs, Lycastella Feuerborn, Lycastilla Solís-Weiss & Espinasa and
Lycastopsis Augener become junior synonyms of Namanereis.
Thirty-six species are described, including seven new species of Namalycastis (N. arista n.sp., N.
borealis n.sp., N. elobeyensis n.sp., N. intermedia n.sp., N. macroplatis n.sp., N. multiseta n.sp., N.
nicoleae n.sp.), four new species of Namanereis (N. minuta n.sp., N. serratis n.sp., N. stocki n.sp., N.
sublittoralis n.sp.), and three widespread species groups (Namalycastis abiuma, Namanereis littoralis,
N. quadraticeps). Fourteen species are newly placed into synonymy, Lycastis maxillo-falciformis Harms,
L. maxillo-ovata Harms, L. maxillo-robusta Harms, Lycastis meraukensis Horst, L. nipae Pflugfelder, L.
ouanaryensis Gravier, L. ranauensis Feuerborn, L. vivax Pflugfelder, Lycastopsis augeneri Okuda, L.
tecolutlensis Rioja, Namalycastis rigida Pillai, N. tachinensis Rosenfeldt, N. vuwaensis Ryan, and
Namanereis littoralis Hutchings & Turvey. A neotype is designated for Namalycastis hawaiiensis
(Johnson), and lectotypes are designated for Namalycastis geayi (Gravier), N. senegalensis (Saint-Joseph),
N. terrestris (Pflugfelder), Namanereis amboinensis (Pflugfelder) and N. littoralis (Grube). Keys to
genera and species are given.
Namanereidinae are generally confined to the tropics and subtropics. Maximum species-diversity
occurs in the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific, in particular in coastal areas subjected to recent uplifting,
where both littoral-zone and freshwater (riparian and subterranean) forms occur. Phylogenetic results
indicate that in both Namalycastis and Namanereis there is a preference for freshwater habitats among
species with apomorphic traits (corollary being that marine habitats are favoured by the plesiomorphic
members). This suggests that the ancestor of the Namanereidinae was a euryhaline coastal species.

Abstract: This revision treats the members of the ant genus Lordomyrma (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) occurring in Fiji. Ten species are recognized, of which four are new: L. curvata sp. n., L. desupra sp. n., L. levifrons (Mann) stat. n., L. polita (Mann) stat. n., L. rugosa (Mann), L. sukuna sp. n., L. stoneri (Mann) stat. n., L. striatella (Mann), L. tortuosa(Mann), and L. vuda sp. n. Descriptions of each species are provided, along with distribution maps and a key for the identification of workers. Additional figures and identification tools are available on Antweb <http://www.antweb.org/fiji.jsp>. A preliminary comparison with Lordomyrma from Australia, New Guinea, and New Caledonia is followed by a discussion of the distribution of species within Fiji and an outline of future research directions pertaining to the taxonomy, biogeography and conservation of the Fijian species.

A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of Iran

Title: A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of Iran

Authors: Paknia, Omid; Radchenko, Alexander; Alipanah, Helen; Pfeiffer, Martin

Abstract: The first checklist of the ants of Iran is presented. The study is based on a comprehensive review of literature and the
examination of material from our own collections and from several museums and institutions of different European
countries. 110 species belonging to 26 genera of six subfamilies of the Formicidae (Formicinae, Myrmicinae, Ponerinae,
Dolichoderinae, Dorylinae and Aenictinae) are recognized from Iran. Most of the reported species were sampled in the
north of the country, mostly near human settlements. One subfamily (Dorylinae), two genera (Ponera LATREILLE, 1804
and Dorylus FABRICIUS, 1793), as well as seven species (Aphaenogaster gibbosa (LATREILLE, 1798), A. kurdica RUZSKY,
1905, Crematogaster bogojawlenskii RUZSKY, 1905, Messor minor (ANDRE, 1883), Tapinoma karavaievi EMERY, 1925,
Temnothorax parvulus (SCHENCK, 1852) and Tetramorium inerme MAYR, 1877) were recorded for the Iranian fauna for
the first time. The most speciose genera were Camponotus MAYR, 1861, Cataglyphis FOERSTER, 1850 and Messor FOREL,
1890 with 19, 14 and 13 species, respectively. Palaearctic zoogeographic elements prevail in Iran, but several Oriental
and Afrotropical genera were also found. Many parts of the country are still studied insufficiently or even not studied at
all and we suppose that the total species richness in Iran is essentially higher.

Title: New species of Lordomyrma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Southeast Asia and Fiji

Authors: Lucky, Andrea; Sarnat, Eli M.

Abstract: Two new species of Lordomyrma are described: L. reticulata sp. nov. from Malaysian Borneo and L. vanua sp. nov. from
Fiji. The occurrence of the former in Borneo expands the range of this genus to include Southeast Asia and the description
of a new Fijian Lordomyrma indicates that this genus remains to be fully sampled, even in regions where it is considered
to be well known. Taken together, these two findings suggest that Lordomyrma occupies a less disjunct distribution
and is more widely distributed than previously suspected. There is a need for further sampling to reveal both diversity
and distribution in this cryptic genus.
Abstract: Alobevania Kawada & Deans, n. gen., and three new ensign wasps, A. gattiae Kawada & Deans, n. sp., A. tavaresi Kawada & Deans, n. sp., and A. longisaeta Kawada & Deans, n. sp. are described from specimens collected in the Neotropics.
A key to species and discussion of how this previously undescribed lineage fits within Evaniidae are provided. This taxonomic effort is greatly enhanced by the integration of numerous Web resources: a) an ontology of Hymenoptera morphology, b) annotations and collections of images archived in Morphbank, c) descriptive species pages at Evanioidea Online, d) Web-based multi-entry and bifurcating diagnostic keys at Evanioidea Online, e) taxon pages at the Tree of Life Web Project, f) registration of taxa, authors, taxonomic references, and specimens at ZooBank and assignment of Life Science Identifiers (LSIDs), g) georeferencing of all specimen localities, with downloadable KML files, h) manuscript
is marked up using TaxonX and is available through Plazi.
